Another Arrow to the Knee

Town Guards are everywhere in Fantasy RPGs, from Skyrim to Dungeons & Dragons. They're so common, we often assume they have to be there-- but do they? What would a fantasy society look like without town guards? What alternatives could there be? 

This RPG module strives to break down the narrative and in-world roles that Town Guards commonly fill in D&D-like RPGs, and provide design recommendations and tools for creating alternative characters without sacrificing narrative utility. 

The module also contains several sample Alternatives, from specific NPCs to unique factions to world elements that can do anything a Town Guard can, without perpetuating the idea that every society "needs" police.

This module was made as part of CODA Game Collective's Post-Police Design Challenge,  and is designed in support of the Black Lives Matter and #DefundThePolice movements.
